Abstract:[Observations regarding the status of the couple ‘sau / lui’ in present-day Romanian language]
This article analyses the distribution in present-day Romanian of two means of expressing possession in the nominal phrase: the possessive determiner ‘sau’ and the third person genitive form of the personal pronoun ‘lui / ei’. Examples were taken both from actual written and spoken contemporary Romanian.
The study showed that the possessive adjective tends to specialize for the written literary language, while the personal pronoun is used in the common speech. The semantic and syntactic characteristics of the possessive (reflexive meaning, mark of politeness, mark of human referent) are subordinate to its use in the literary language and are not regularly expressed in the context.
Another conclusion of the analysis was that, on one hand, the speakers prefer the personal pronoun due to the gender information that it contains, but on the other hand, there is a tendency to use the possessive determiner in generic sentences, precisely because it can not mark gender, thus emphasizing the general character of the utterance.
