Abstract:This article presents the usual means of expressing the negation as it is registered in Şeapte taine a besearecii, an old text published in Iaşi in 1644. My approach takes into consideration different possible ways of expressing the negation. Some of those possibilities are specialized adverbs, such as nu, ba, nici, negative pronouns or adjectives such as nime, nemică, niciun, nicio or adverbials like nicăiuri, nice dănăoară, nice într-un chip. The text proves that some particularities are specific to old Romanian language used in the first half of seventeenth century. There are also some particularities which are innovative, usual for modern language.
Key words:old literary language, philology, negation
