Abstract:This study addresses a somewhat neglected aspect of comparative Romance morphology, namely the fact that while in most Romance languages the inherited conjugational classes of Latin are subject to phonologically or morphologically motivated neutralization in respect of their thematic vowels, and therefore tend to reduce in number, Daco-Romance (and especially Istro-Romanian) stands out by effectively creating new inflexion classes in the verb. I explore how these have arisen, and reach the (perhaps not surprising) conclusion that, in most cases, the source of these new classes is purely phonological in nature.
Key words:Daco-Romance; Romanian; Istro-Romanian; verb; inflexion classes; thematic vowels
