Abstract:
In recent years, a shift in syntactic analysis was noticed after grammar specialists had started approaching various diachronic language facts in an attempt to detect the mechanisms able to explain certain syntactic constructions in today‟s language. Although such an analysis may seem a lengthy one, we regard it as beneficial for the description of syntactic structures constructed throughout the centuries. This study is part of the above-mentioned trend and aims to focus on the occurrence and development in the Romanian language of certain syntactic groups made of a relative/interrogative/ interrogative-relative pronoun ce „what‟ and an indefinite pronoun altul „else‟. Traces of such widely used syntagms in the past can also be identified today, especially in familiar speech, although their structure has evolved (ce altceva/altceva ce „what else / something else‟).
Key words:
Latin language, old Romanian language, pronoun, pronominal adjective, syntax, syntagm, quantifier
