Abstract: | [Diachronic perspective on rare terms in the Romanian language of the Bible] The present study aims to investigate a series of loan-words from Hebrew, used in Romanian translations of the Holy Bible, from the 17th century to the contemporary times. We will track the graphic, phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical-semantic changes of some rare lexical loans, which Romanian translators have used in time. We start from the premise that the study of Bible translations may reflect the change of thinking regarding the translator’s relationship with the sacred text, considering that the Romanian language becomes the language of worship in the seventeenth century, by nationalizing the divine service. This period represents the „quest” moments, the Bible versions proving the richest set of terms for the same concept. Elements of innovation and introduction of technical terms occur particularly in non- synodal versions (Heliade 1858, Cornilescu 1924, Septuagint 2004). Synodal versions published after World War II are updates of some older ones, which explains the maintenance of a conservative character in the biblical language. On the other hand, the publishers of the Synodal versions, by perpetuating the explicit translations, emphasize the „educational” side of the scriptures. |
