Abstract:[On forbidden first names, linguistic traditions and socioanthroponymy. The importance of not being Batman]
In February 2014 a list of 54 first names were forbidden for use in a state of Mexico. However, which criteria are suitable to make such a list? The aim of this paper is to examine uncommon first names in the Spanish language speech community of Tlalnepantla de Baz, Mexico, during the period 1960–1985, from the perspective of socioanthroponymy. In this study, first names appearing only once in the corpus were analyzed in terms of three factors: 1) the modern language in which they were registered, 2) the grammatical gender to which they belong, and 3) the nominal category to which they are assigned, based on the norms of language use of the time. The research concludes that a National Center of Onomastics is needed in Mexico.
Key words:first names, socioanthroponymy, lexicology, Mexico, twentieth century
