Abstract: | [An outline of the system of Czech exonyms] The paper deals with the types of Czech exonyms and with the development of their system. The classification is based on the origins of exonyms, on the frequency of their occurrence in time, and on their language formation. The study of the development of Czech forms of foreign geographical names has revealed three main stages of this process. The first one began in the early Middle Ages and continued approximately down to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries; the second phase covered the period spanning from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries to the mid–20th century and the third stage, very different in character from the preceding ones, belongs primarily to the period beginning in the 1950s. The paper studies the topics mentioned in greater detail. |
