| Abstract: | The aim of this study is to examine the socio-pragmatic meaning of the management of time in Japanese interaction and how this relates to the now classic theory of universal politeness expounded by Brown and Levinson. We examine the chronemic practices of silence, pausing and overlapping in the construction of Japanese discourse through the conversational analysis of data transcribed from a TV show. The investigation reveals how the Japanese suspension of discourse can carry various implications ranging from agreement to disagreement, from deferential reserve before making a bold request to the indication of absolute determination to enforce a penalty. One significant finding is that the pragmatic value of “freezing” discourse is totally context-dependent and can convey either a negative or positive value or even both simultaneously. It emerges that Japanese interlocutors pragmatically manage the duration of discourse primarily in order to signal politeness. |
