| Abstract: | [Romanian Christian terms inherited from Latin] As we cannot explain the present otherwise than by looking into the past, it is important to delineate, to begin with, the historical background of the dissemination of Christianity among the Romanised population north of the Danube as early as the first half of the fourth century, when the Christian terminology of Latin origin was also established. On the one hand, the Latin character of Christian terminology in Romanian is indicative of the Christianisation of the population and the preservation of the connections with the Empire. On the other hand, the richness of the terminology suggests a fairly advanced degree of organisation of the Christian communities. The keeping of the same Christian terms in all the Romanian dialects demonstrates that the Christianisation of the Romanised population north and south of the Danube took place almost concomitantly. This paper analyses the terms biserică, Dumnezeu, păgân, Paște and sărbătoare, whose etymons have pre-Christian Greek, Latin or Jewish origins. |
