Abstract:[Inflectional classification of nouns in Romanian]
An analysis of how descriptive studies have addressed noun classification in Romanian reveals a great diversity of interpretations. Thus, the first normative grammar, according to the history of language, takes the Nominative ending as a criterion and establishes three declensions. Subsequently, not just for the needs of automatic translation, it was observed that such a classification is inoperable. Taking into account homonyms based on case forms and endings, the following numbers of configurations (nominal subclasses) were reached: 31 (Moisil 1962), 17 (Diaconescu 1961), 11 (Guţu Romalo 1985), 10 (GALR 2008). This study discards the category of declension and classifies nouns according to their number of forms, as in the case of adjectives.
Key words:homonymy, personal gender, case, ending, declension
