Abstract:[Traces of history in the Wallachian vocabulary]
The article deals with the “fate” of some lexical units of Russian origin in the Wallachian dialects, dating back to the conflicts between Russia and Turkey, i.e., beginning with the end of the 18th century, continuing with the 19th century, and culminating with the War of Independence (1877–1878).
The comments on the lexical units investigated refer to the status of dialects, in general, and of Wallachian, in particular, as “living archives” storing facts of linguistic and historical importance, which on certain occasions can replace actual documents.
Key words:semantic diversion, necessary borrowing, war-related lexical borrowing, resemanticisation
Language: Romanian
