[A retreating suffix: -elnic]
Across Romance, one of the characteristics of Romanian is the presence of words derived by means of the suffix -elnic. The first Romanian words derived by means of this suffix date from the mid 17th century, acting as new words formed on a Slavic suffixal pattern. Most of these words are adjectives, but also nouns and, in rarer cases, adverbs, and their root can be a verb, a noun, an adjective and an adverb. In contemporary Romanian, the suffix -elnic is old-fashioned, being mostly replaced with common language corresponding affixes. The suffix however is still present in non-standard language, and especially at regional level, where the archaic element is more prominent. Stylistically, it is par excellence very expressive, having precise defined terms.
