Abstract:[Two pseudo-periphrases: The land of the morning calm and The land of the rising sun]
This article demonstrates that the two periphrases under analysis were not formed like other similar structures. Joseon/Chosŏn, the old name of Korea, and Nihon/Nippon, the traditional name of Japan, have been reproduced in written in Chinese characters. The significance of these ideograms was interpreted by Europeans as nicknames of these countries.
