| Abstract: | The awareness about the textile materials’ terminology is an interesting fact, as well in what does concern linguistics and culture in its generality. Cotton is a term which does own a double significance: it does designate either the living plant itself or the textile material manufactured out of it. Due to this plant’s long since confirmed usefulness, this term does carry within itself an important part of the history of humanity. At first the bursting trade activities and, consequently, the further extensive connections established in time between the Orient and the Occident have contributed to the easing of the circulation of terms from the textiles’ domain to and fro various languages. In order to correctly appreciate the importance and diversity of the textile materials’ terminology, an extensive study of this domain’s specific definition, senses, etymology and phraseological distinctive indices would be highly valuable in the discipline of linguistics. |
