Abstract:[Names of characters in Mihail Sadoveanu’s Baltagul: Conventional vs unconventional reading]
As a result of being individualised by means of names, literary characters become independent entities, bearing sense, communicating something and also revealing their identity to the reader. Sadoveanu’s work develops expressive values of naming. It reveals a world whose laws are built or destroyed from the point of view of names.
We aim to approach the names of characters from the novel Baltagul from a triple perspective: etymological, trying to reconstruct semantic coordinates within the anthroponyms; symbolic, using information provided by lexicographical sources; and contextual-connotative, decoding any possible “sense” that the text assigns to a name (discursive sense).
The theoretical perspective proposed is interdisciplinary, promoted by anthroponymy, linguistics and literary theory. Often respecting the rules of onomastic convention, the novel proposed for analysis reflects an archaic world, inside which names underlie the existence of beings, often determining their fate.
