Abstract:[The oil industry and its representatives in the public space of Ploieşti. Name and naming: Institutions and streets]
Prahova land and Ploiești have become a symbol of oil and of the Romanian oil industry. The first refinery in the world was founded here (1857) and the largest oil production of the country was also processed here. This advantage has been transferred into the collective mind and public space of Ploiești under different aspects, including names of institutions, associations and clubs, busts of statues, and streets. We try to illustrate all these by some benchmark examples of names of institutions (The Petroleum-Gas University, The Oil National Museum, The Petroleum Industrial School-Teleajen, The Technical College “Lazar Edeleanu”, “Petrolul” Sport Club), streets (The Petroleum Boulevard and Rezervoarelor [The Oil Tanks’], Rafinorilor [The Refiners’], Petrochimiştilor [The Petrochemists’], Pacureţi [The Black oil], Sondelor [The Wells’], Ţiţeiului [The Crude oil’s], Laboratorului [The Laboratory’s]), and so on.
