| Abstract: | [A dialectological perspective on a dictionary of onomastics] The article is based on material excerpted from Dicţionarul numelor de familie româneşti [The Dictionary of Romanian Family Names] by Iorgu Iordan. Reading the volume from a dialectological perspective gives one the opportunity to reconsider some etymological solutions, as the dialectal reality is also a decisive element in creating family names. For this reason, a number of factors that pertain to orality offer adequate explanations in some situations, without it being necessary to turn to foreign sources. Thus, the paper takes into account the series of multiple phonetic accidents, contaminations, common names “used” in onomastics, numerous derivatives, and so on. This study draws attention to the various possibilities of explaining anthroponyms, especially those favoured by exploiting the information provided by dialectology. |
