Abstract:In Romanian phraseology, there are some combinations whose structures contain lexemes related to Christian values, on the one hand, and non-Christian values, on the other hand. Among such elements, a special place is, owing to the role played in Christians’ lives, the words Dumnezeu ‘God’ şi Domn ‘Lord’. At the opposite side, we have such words as drac, naiba, aghiuţă ‘devil’.
The symbol elements having a Christian and non-Christian value from the structure of phraseological units give them a special emotional charge. At the same time, the lexemes under discussion here lead to rendering a wide variety of semantic values. Since God is the impersonation of good, the phraseological units containing the lexemes Dumnezeu and Domn ‘God / Lord’ express the following ideas: ‘kindness’, ‘well-doing’, ‘honour’, ‘value’, ‘success’, ‘protection’, etc. At the other extreme, the expressions organised with the words drac, naiba, aghiuţă ‘devil’ (which symbolise ‘the evil’) render such concepts as: ‘unkindness’, ‘non-value’, ‘foulness’, ‘devilishness’, ‘slyness’, ‘obstinacy’, etc.
