Abstract:
Starting from the idea that sitcoms are embedded in the source culture, in this case the American culture, and their cultural component often represents a challenge for the translator, this paper attempts to illustrate the way the translation of proper name, as a cultural element, is tackled in the Romanian subtitles of sitcoms. After discussing the features and functions of proper names and the problems they pose in translation, we introduce a case study consisting in the analysis of the translation of proper names extracted from an episode of the American sitcom The Nanny and its Romanian translation. The aim of this analysis is to identify the factors that influence the translation of proper names in the given context, taking into consideration the specific constraints imposed by subtitling, and the translation solutions adopted in the case of proper names, with a view to explaining them.
