Abstract:
The present paper examines the evolution of dacă e and dacă ceva from conditional clauses to discourse markers. The first part of the paper proposes a structural analysis of the construction dacă e and describes two linguistic mechanisms which might be responsible for pragmaticalization: ellipsis and substitution. Dacă ceva is a loan translation that reproduces the Russian discourse marker yesli chto. In the second part of the paper we analyze the behaviour of dacă e and dacă ceva in spoken Romanian from Romania and from the Republic of Moldavia (the Moldavian language as it is its official denomination), highlighting their pragmatic functions.
