Abstract:The 16th century documents contain two deferential forms of the third-person pronoun: one based on the abstract noun domniia (Lordship) and followed by the personal pronoun, and the other, followed by the possessive. Since their first attestations, these forms have preserved the same socio-pragmatic connotations and occupied the same syntactic positions. In the 16th century the two cell-mates are in complementary geographical distribution. The forms based on personal pronouns are attested in the southern area, whereas those based on possessives are recorded in the northern area.
Domniia lui / sa was originally a DP functioning as a form of deferential referring or as a honorific. In the first half of the 16th century the forms were not fully grammaticalized. By the end of the 16th century, the honorific had turned into a pronoun of polite referring.
All the documents are analyzed according to Brown and Gilman’s dimensions of power and solidarity. In OR, domniia lui / sa was initially used to refer to/ address the high-ranking /ranked or exalted figures. This usage was progressively extended down the social hierarchy as a mark of respect due to individuals of higher rank. The upper-class individuals of equal rank started to use the new pronouns to address each other, thus stating their being in authority, and also making relevant their intention to observe the formal frame in which they were operating.
