Abstract:One of the most interesting and original work published by Egoproza - Polirom Publishing House is sure Butterflies War, written by the critic Paul Cernat and the Moldovian poet Andrei Ungureanu. The subject of this experiment, butterflies, is surely very odd, but the book is a surprise even thanks to the language and the style chosen by the authors, characterized by refinement and the absence of any vulgarity together with a funny mix of poetry and prose and a “non-conventional language” (that is the language used by the butterflies in an enigmatic alphabet, from which the book itself is fictionally translated).
The characters have got well defined psychological features, which reflect the world where they live, the daily Butterflies Kingdom and the Nightly Butterflies Empire. These two worlds exist in two different moments, that is day and night, but they share the same aims: a war to re-establish a primordial order, existing before the creation of the world of oppositions by the six fireflies. The connection between these two worlds and the deus ex machina of the life is the servant of the six fireflies, Chevalier Oranj.
The book is a pleasant literary divertisment though the plot of the story is quiet poor. However its style, the postmodern attitude of the authors, the refined language and the original subject demonstrate that Butterflies War belongs to the Romanian innovator literary current, which remind us of Urmuz, Arghezi and Cărtărescu.
