Abstract:In Transylvania, the diffusion of knowledge became an important element in a cultural program worthy of the ideology of the 18th century. Cultural betterment, the enlightenment of the masses involved the cultivated stratum of society in spreading culture more widely. The Romanian intellectuals’ writings are published as agrotechnical works, as school textbooks or as popular writings meant to disseminate science among people. The contribution of the Romanian scholars, representatives of the Enlightenment, to setting up a Romanian economic and scientific literature was substantial. Their activity of translating and adapting foreign literature in different fields (economy, medicine, science – mathematics, physics, geography etc.) may be regarded as a process of integrating Romanian culture under Enlightenment influences, of assimilating European values based on national traditions.
