The article presents a comparative analysis of Margaret Atwood’s short story entitled Polarities (1977) and two of its translations into Russian published in 1981 and in 2004, respectively. This analysis is an attempt to show that nowadays Russian translators have a different way of translating Canadian authors than in the times of Soviet Union due to a number of reasons, among them, their better understanding of Western societies and the fact that censorship is much less strict than it was during the Soviet Period.
