| Abstract: | In early 16th-century France, the people’s common language was beginning to replace Latin even in institutional or scholarly context. This process implied an improvement of the methodology with a view to equal or even surpass Latin literature. French theorists thought that the best way to do so would be to follow Latin authors, who had enriched their own language by translating or importing from Greek. The present paper focuses on the theorists’ debate upon the advantages and disadvantages of alternative approaches. |
