Abstract:The Holy Scripture is a collection of sixty-six books written during a period of almost fifteen centuries. The biblical text, which is divided in two parts – the Old and the New Testament -, contains teachings, parables, historical truths, ritual and liturgical practices officiated by Christ Himself and His Apostles.
The putting up-to-date of its contents is performed in the Orthodox Church through the ritual performance of the Liturgy, of the Sacrements and of the Hierurgies. In the context of these manifestations, the biblical text is communicated not only verbally, but also symbolically. The icon, earning its quality as a symbol through its power of expression and the value of information it enciphers, becomes the main mediator in the didactic activity of the Church and also argumentative instrument for the rhetoric of the pulpit.
