Abstract:
  • Most surnames were formed starting from male names. This is understandable, if we take into consideration the fact that men used to play a central part in the family life and in society. Only in their absence (when deceased or drafted, etc., generally because of a prolonged absence from home) or when the man entered the woman’s household by marriage, did the entire family acknowledge the name of the latter.
This article aims to analyse to what extent female names are included today in the category of Romanian patronyms.
