For the French learners who study Romanian, the similarities between the two languages can more often than not be a disadvantage, as they tend to make certain false analogies with lexical items or grammatical structures in their mother tongue (French) and this leads to confusions and interference. In the present paper, we intend a systematization of the particularities of the acquisition of noun gender in Romanian by the French speakers, by mainly focusing on the factors that favor the appearance of interference. We insist, in our presentation, on the necessity for a contrastive approach in teaching this grammatical category of the noun, in order to facilitate the understanding of the different linguistic phenomena in the two languages in contact and to prevent the appearance of negative transfer.
Key words:
contrastive approach, negative transfer, linguistic interference, regularization
