Abstract:The expansion of the Turks in the Balkan Peninsula and in Greece was facilitated by the crisis within the former Byzantine Empire, which led to a series of political and administrative changes. The Turkish influence upon the Romanian language was felt at the end of the 14th century and at the middle of the 19th century. Today, this influence is felt only in several regions of our country, especially in Dobroudja.
The number of the words taken over is large enough: 2,500 words in Daco-Romanian, 1,629 words in Aromanian.
As far as Aromanian is concerned, it was noticed that the Turkish influence holds the second place, following the Greek influence, out of the 7,097 words of unknown origin listed by Tache Papahagi in the Dictionary of the Aromanian Dialect, 18% are of Turkish origin.
Some official borrowings became folk ones, too, but the majority remained at the “outskirts” of vocabulary and disappeared during the development of society. The borrowings which entered via folk means are firmer and long-lasting and are widely encountered.
In modern Romanian 750-900 words survived; these are terms that belong, to a great extend, to the folk language.
Compared to Daco-Romanian, Aromanian better kept base meaning of the Turkish borrowing. We can notice the difference in stylistic burden, as some terms acquired a disparaging sense in Daco-Romanian.
