Abstract:The autor first discusses the role of the Mediterranean Sea played in the life of the peoples of antiquity, illustrating it with the synonymic series – the respective referent, i.e. the Sea, developed in Latin. Two synonymic series of the Romanian Sea terminology are then studied, namely: mal (shore), țărm (coast / sea shore), liman (coast / port) and undă (wave), val (wave / huge wave), talaz (billow). A particular attention is attached to the verbal derivative a tălăzui (to billow) frequently used with figurative meanings in The Book of the Olt River by Geo Bogza. Relevant conclusions are drawn from this study.
