Abstract:Evidences of human thinking and wisdom, the figures are elements that underlie a universal language. The research of the expressions as they are known in different languages show a common, Indo–European background. The meanings of the Indo-European roots which gave rise to the names of figures are related to the concerns of the primitive man, of connection with the universe. They preserve in the current names and are visible not only in the languages of the same family, but also in languages that belong to different language groups.
Key words:figure, etymology, Indo-European, root, kinship
