Abstract:Nicolae Steinhardt’s criticism is full of vitality, with insertions of genuine experiences, a form of criticism in which empathy is the fundamental means of communication/ communion with the literary work. The style of N. Steinhardt’s essays is structured from the perspective of a fundamental duality, putting in balance, on one hand, the aspiration for beauty, the cult of the Apollonian forms, the bookish reverie and, on the other, the romantic sensibility, elementality, the Dionysiac ardor to embrace in a vitalist manner both culture and nature. The main asset of N. Steinhardt’s essays is, in fact, its element of vulnerability: the pathos, sometimes transformed into rhetorism, leads to a steamed up writing where the performance of the feelings converts the subject in a simple pretext for exalted effusions.
