Abstract: | [An old Romanian syntactic feature preserved in Istroromanian: interpolation] Interpolation (i.e. the possibility to place different constituents between the auxiliary and the lexical verb or between the pronominal clitic and the verb) is attested both in old Romanian and in Istroromanian. In this paper, we claim that Istroromanian interpolation is an archaic phenomenon preserved from old Romanian and it is not due to linguistic contact with Croatian. By analysing parallel texts in Istroromanian and Croatian, we show that interpolation is possible in both languages, but the patterns are often different. Hence, we put forth the hypothesis that the preservation of interpolation in Istroromanian, a feature shared with old Romanian, was also supported by parameter overlapping, i.e. as far as interpolation is concerned, a similar parametric option is available both in Istroromanian and in Croatian. The data presented in this paper also support the idea that, similarly to old Romanian, Istroromanian presents instances of low verb movement. |
