Abstract: | [Lexical Notes: Istro-Romanian Terms of Latin Origin in Animal Denomination – I. Domestic Animals] The study aims to analyse the words of Latin origin belonging to the semantic field of animals used to name domestic animals as well as some of their physiological and behavioural particularities. The linguistic material is researched by resorting to various lexicographical works, linguistic atlases and collections of dialectal texts. When describing this lexical semantic subcategory, the focus is on the phonetic variants and the occurrences of these utterances, the spread of these inherited Latin terms in Istro-Romanian, their derivative potential, the stability versus instability of these old speech forms under the pressure of the Croatian language, as well as the change in the material and spiritual existence of the speakers of the Istro-Romanian dialect. |
Key words: | Istro-Romanian dialect, inherited words, Latin origin, stability vs. instability, semantic field, names of domestic animals |
