Abstract:Romance Studies (Romanistics in a broad sense) have not still defined exactly the reach of the term ‘dialect’, which for most scholars refers both to a mere linguistic reality and to a sociolinguistic category. ‘Dialect’ just refers to the latter field, so that we propose ‘variant’ to refer to linguistic varieties of any language. Some other terms such as sociolect and geolect need revision. Therefore, the history of the Romance regional languages shows a long process aimed to gain the consideration of languages (linguification processes). However, the fixation of their spelling systems shows how in many cases these languages are not provided with language-like, coherent spelling systems, but with dialectal spelling systems. A brief analysis of some of these Romance regional languages according to the criterion of language-based or dialect-based is included.
