Abstract:The following interdisciplinary study relies on the pursuit of two academic goals. They can be related to the combined fields of theory of culture and history of literature. Its first goal is to define fractal mathematics as highly valuable from an aesthetic perspective. In this respect, fractals shall be mainly perceived as scientific and natural patterns with intrinsic aesthetic value. The second goal of the study is to prove the decisive narrative role of fractals in the construction of postmodern fiction. Illustrations will be provided from American and Romanian fiction (Thomas Pynchon, Mircea Cărtărescu, Simona Popescu, Adrian Oţoiu, Sebastian A. Corn, Ion Manolescu), with focus on the mainstream novels of Thomas Pynchon.
Key words:theory of culture, history of literature, fractals, postmodern fiction
