Abstract:
  • Constant assessment and self-assessment are invaluable to all interpreters concerned with the quality of their own work and are an absolute requirement to trainee-interpreters who need to actively acquire and improve their interpreting skills. However, trainee interpreters encounter considerable problems when confronted to the need of producing feedback for their peers’ simultaneous interpretations. Indeed, assessing simultaneous interpretations entails being able to follow in real time both the original and the interpretation while also keeping in mind or writing down the various issues that should be subsequently brought to the attention of the interpreter: information loss, additions, inadvertencies etc. This paper means to analyze the various difficulties encountered by assessors in simultaneous interpretation and to provide possible solutions for improving the trainee interpreters’ assessment-technique.
