La question identitaire marque depuis longtemps le discours politique en Roumanie. À la mise en avant de l’identité daco-romaine du XVIIIe a succédé une période où la Roumanie regardait vers l’est sous l’influence soviétique. La chute du régime soviétique a permis au pays de rejoindre l’UE en 2007 après un processus de rapprochement plus long par rapport aux autres pays émancipés de l’influence communiste, ce qui fut vécu comme un « retour en Europe » et servit de « légitimation » aux reformes (Ragaru, 2003). Le referendum sur l’adhésion n’a cependant rencontré qu’un accueil mitigé révélant un désintérêt des Roumains pour la question européenne. Quatre ans après l’adhésion, quels sentiments les Roumains éprouvent-ils envers les Européens? L’intégration de la Roumanie a-t-elle réussi ? Nous avons sondé les représentations que les Roumains se faisaient des Européens en utilisant une méthodologie empruntée à la psychologie sociale (Lacassagne et coll., 2001) pour mettre en évidence la partition des groupes. Un test d’association libre a été soumis à cent étudiants d’une université de province, avec comme stimulus Roumain ou Européen (50 participants respectivement). Le traitement des résultats a révélé une quasi-similitude des réponses, semblant indiquer une intégration européenne réussie.
For a long time, the question of identity has marked political discourses in Romania. The assessment of a daco-roman identity was followed by an era when Romania was looking to the East under Soviet influence (Deletant, 1991). In 2007, Romania joined the European Union after a process of rapprochement which was longer than for the other countries that were emancipated from Soviet influence (Lhomel, 2003 & 2004). This is taken as a « return to Europe » and serves to « legitimize » reforms (Ragaru, 2003). However the referendum on the European Union obtained only lukewarm reception showing disinterest on the part of Romanians. How do Romanians feel towards the Europeans four years after Union membership? Has the integration of Romania been successful? Using a methodology borrowed from social psychology (Lacassagne et al., 2001) to bring to light the segregation of groups, we carried out a survey on Romanian representations of Europeans. A free association test was administered to 100 students in a provincial university (Arges district) using Romanian or European as stimulus (50 participants respectively). The analysis of the results revealed a quasi-similarity of answers. European integration seems to be successful as representations of Europeans hardly differ from that of co-nationals.
