Abstract:
  • Our comparison of the three Romanian versions of the Declaration of Human and Citizen Rights of 1789 is expected to reveal the gap that may widen during the translation process. As we are going to see, this gap appears between the letter and spirit of a constitutional text whose “philosophy” exceeds the translator’s cognitive knowledge. Through its ontological vocation, the discourse in which being becomes language and language becomes being requires an understanding-translation effort which is both philological and philosophical, as two world perceptions ultimately become one World in the target text. The Romanian versions of the founding texts of human rights are grossly outdated and faulty to date, and will remain so as long as the translator of humanities is not institutionally valued as the co-author of the translated text and his/her work is not perceived as a work of recreation.
