Abstract:
  • The focus of this article is the study of speech acts in dramatic dialogues; the goal is to make students aware of the usefulness of these speech acts so that they may improve their ability to read dramatic texts. We begin with a short reminder of certain basic principles relating to the theoretical descriptions of speech acts and their functioning in dramatic textuality. We then go on to examine the ways in which the speech acts attributed to characters or signaled through stage directions are verbalized. We conclude with various activities centered on the comprehension and interpretation of dramatic texts on the basis of the speech acts performed by characters.
