Dans cet article, nous examinons la distribution de l’indéfini dépendant « vreun/vreo » en roumain. Le principal but de notre étude est d’identifier les contraintes qui régissent la distribution restreinte de ce déterminant. Nous montrons que ses occurrences peuvent être réduite à deux types de contextes (i) les contextes de polarité négative et (ii) les contextes épistémiques. En examinant son interaction avec les opérateurs modaux et les verbes d’attitude, nous proposons une nouvelle généralisation (« la contrainte épistémique ») et défendons l’hypothèse que la distribution de vreun est sensible aux alternatives épistémiques du locuteur. Nous discutons également la pertinence de ce paradigme pour une typologie des indéfinis dépendants à travers les langues.
In this paper, we examine the properties of the Romanian dependent indefinite « vreun/vreo ». Our main goal is empirical: we seek to identify the constraints governing the restricted distribution of this determiner. We argue that it occurs in two kinds of contexts (i) negative polarity and (ii) epistemic contexts. Focusing on its occurrences in modal and attitude contexts, we put forward a novel empirical generalization (« the epistemic constraint ») and argue that its restricted distribution is sensitive to epistemic alternatives. We discuss the relevance of this pattern with respect to the cross-linguistic typology of dependent indefinites.
