Abstract:[A Few Notes on Perception Verbs. From Direct to Indirect Perception] Verbs of perception participate in various constructions (with nominal, finite or non-finite complements), in which they designate either direct (sensorial) perception or indirect (sensorial or cognitive) perception.
The transition from direct to indirect perception is realized compositionally, depending primarily on certain semantic features of the direct object, but also on the semantics of other constituents present in the sentence. There are configurations which denote only direct physical perception, whereas others designate either the direct perception or the indirect. Depending on the sensorial / cognitive reading, the verbs vedea and auzi involve in indicative – gerund or infinitive – subjunctive competitive constructions.
