Abstract:The present study aims at revealing the cultural heritage of the folkloric texts on Meșterul Manole (the Master builder Manole), one of the archetypal figures of the Romanian oral literature. The ballad known as Meșterul Manole (the Master builder Manole) or Mănăstirea Argeșului (the Monastery or Arges) is among the most popular Romanian ballads. Its highest number of variants attested is due to the prestige imposed by the variant published by V. Alecsandri, which was, for a century and a half, one of the representative readingss for what is usually called folklore. As revealed by the text, the human sacrifice made in order to ensure the succesful raising of a great Christian Orthodox church gives the ballad and its variants a profoundly different dimension that is discussed in this contribution.
