[Approaching Romanian Compliment from an Im/politeness Perspective] The article investigates compliments considering a first order approach to im/politeness, that is emphasizing participants’ evaluations and metapragmatic comments regarding the interlocutors communicative behaviour. The corpus is represented by literary texts from the mid-nineteenth century. The analysis illustrates the cultural norms and communicative changes of the Romanian society under the impact of Western influence.
