Abstract:In recent times it has become habitual for literary theorists to explore contiguous fields of study and to appropriate for the benefit of their own discipline theories originally developed in neighbouring areas of research. One such case of interdisciplinary transfer has introduced the logicderived notion of a “possible world” into the vocabulary of literary theory and, with it, the debate about the specificity of literary worlds as compared to those possible in the rigorous logical sense. In this study we attempt to discuss the various definitions given to fictional worlds, to indicate some areas of contact and/or incompatibility between the logical and the literary possible-world theories and to indicate several respects in which the former have influenced the latter.
